NO ON AB1643!
Mandatory Spay/Neuter Does NOT Work! |

For months, the supporters of AB 1634 have touted the alleged success of the 1995 Santa Cruz County spay/neuter ordinance as a "model" for the whole state. They published this widely circulated chart that claims the Santa Cruz ordinance led to a 64% reduction in shelter intakes. (Click here.) Newpapers repeat this claim. It's clear that most of the Assembly members believe it. We don't know where the supporters' data came from, but it isn't Santa Cruz County's shelter intakes. As required under state law, Santa Cruz County has reported their shelter stats to the California Department of Health Services, Veterinary Public Health Section (CDHS-VPH). The official data that Santa Cruz County has reported to CDHS-VPH doesn't remotely resemble what supporters of AB 1634 have been claiming. The official data Santa Cruz County has reported to CDHS-VPH shows that there has been NO IMPROVEMENT in shelter intakes in the years following passage of the spay/neuter ordinance. You can see the comparison between the supporters' claims and CDHS-VPH shelter data here: Additional info is available on the NAIA website. (Click here). Even as shelter intakes have been improving all over California (click here), progress ground to a halt in Santa Cruz County. This is one of the most powerful cases against AB 1634: mandatory spay/neuter doesn't work. The real data from Santa Cruz County destroys the supporters' main argument for AB 1634. The real data from Santa Cruz County supports our case, that passage of AB 1634 would halt the ongoing progress that has been occurring in California shelters over the past three decades. Make sure EVERYBODY knows this. Put the chart with the Santa Cruz data on your website and link to the NAIA report. Make sure legislators and their staff know. Make sure news reporters know. We cannot afford to have this misrepresentation of the truth go on any longer. Laura Sanborn |
