| In June 2009, the Keeshond community lost legendary Lucy Doheny Washington. "Dicky" bought her first Keeshond in 1938 and went on to make history: "Dicky was the owner of the legendary Flakkee Kennels and her dogs took our breed to heights that have never been achieved before or since. "In the late 1940s, Dicky began importing Keeshonden from the Greenwood's Wistonia Kennels in England. Her first import was Eng. Ch. Whimsy of Wistonia who, handled by Porter Washington (later to become her husband), became the first Keeshond bitch to go BIS in America. (She was, also, the first Keeshond to win Group Recognition at Westminster and, to this day, is the only Kees bitch ever to place there.) E/A/C Ch. Wrocky of Wistonia, the dog who became the model for depicting the ideal Keeshond, was among Dicky's Wistonia imports. Dicky began breeding under the prefix Flakkee and it was Wrocky's grandson, Ch. Flakkee Sweepstakes, HOF ROM who made Keeshond history with 46 Bests in Show. Ch. Flakkee Jackpot, HOF ROMX had 34 BIS to his credit and his son, Ch. Flakkee Instant Replay, HOF won BIS 45 times. All three were not only #1 Keeshonden for one or more years, but #1 Non Sporting Dogs as well. Dicky's husband, Porter, handled 17 Flakkee owned or bred Kees to a total of 188 Bests In Show. "Kees bred and imported by the Washingtons formed the foundation for many of today's Keeshond Kennels and left an unsurpassed impact on the breed. The Washington's aim was to exhibit only dogs of merit and to breed only for quality which is why the Flakkee dogs were so consistent in their outstanding quality. "Dicky Washington's passing marks the end of an era. She is survived by three children: Cynthia, Michael and Larry Niven. Larry, incidentally, is a highly acclaimed science fiction writer." Anthea de Forest, Vredendal Keeshonden |

| KCSC was fortunate to purchase a number of items from Dicky Washington's estate sale. We have decided that the five large Keeshond drawings by Cleanthe will be displayed at the upcoming National. Following the show, they will be donated to the AKC Museum of the Dog, which we understand, is what Dicky wanted. For a preview of these remarkable pieces, click here. | ||||||||||
| FUR YOUR EYES ONLY will also offer a number of pieces for auction from the estate. Click here for a preview of the items.
If you are NOT planning to attend the 2010 National but would like to bid on any of the items, you may send your top bid to Betsy Winans at betsy@samwmusic.com. She will hold it and keep the amount secret until after the bidding has closed so competitors can't automatically out-bid you. At the close of the bidding, if your bid is the highest, the item will be yours. |
